What’s New in VelPAK 2021

Kingdom 2021 will be out soon! We’ve been hard at work updating and enhancing both in our velocity modelling and depth conversion software VelPAK and the Kingdom Seismic Inversion software. Here we focus on more of What’s New in VelPAK!

New Well Velocity Calibration Mode

Occasionally it is useful to calibrate well velocities to seismic velocities, particularly if a time-domain velocity HiDef velocity model is required.

The Well module has a more intuitive Calibration fly-out and incorporates a new mode called Drift.  This mode enables the user to calibrate the well velocity values to the seismic interval velocities by computing and applying a drift curve.  The difference between the well interval velocity and seismic interval velocity, as defined by the formation tops depths and grid times, i.e. the drift, is computed and this difference is applied to the well log velocity samples for each layer. This results in a well velocity log that, when used as a time-depth function, will ensure the time converted formation tops tie the time grid. Note that this is a force fitting function, and so the tops and grids must be considered reliable.  The user may specify the order of the drift curve fit function, from constant shift to a 5th order polynomial, and preview the drift curve on the new Well module Drift tab.  The well velocities can be reverted to the original velocities using the uncalibrate option, leading to better methods for depth uncertainty.

New Surface Display Options

The Surface > Display fly-out now contains a Well section that enables a colour-coded legend to be displayed on the Surface map.  The colour coding may be changed to display availability of well data (such as tops and logs), the well status in the model and a number of other schemes.

Additional controls for improved annotation for deviated wells, and annotation of co-located wells and the active well deviation track have been added.

Profile Display

Profile with Well and RMS Velocity.

To aid model verification when working in Profile mode, you can now plot the seismic velocities and colour well track based on well velocity on the Profile display.  Use the re-organised Display fly-out to control what is shown on the profile display.

3d Module

Wells may be turned on or off either individually or in bulk.

Curve Module Data Editing

Polygonal Edit On Curve Display

In addition to the existing single point select & de-select, selection via a user drawn polygon has been added to make handling many points on the cross-plot easier.

The ability to export to ASCII the velocity model along the well trajectories has been provided under the new File > Export > Well Model menu option, enabling the use of the model at the well location in other applications.

Combinations tool

There is now an option to delete pseudo-wells before setting up the Combinations parameters, without having to revert back to the Wizard or using the Velocity>Amalg fly-out.

VelPAK is available as a Petrel Depth Conversion and Velocity Modelling package named Velit.
