Article of the Month – Depth Conversion: The Black Art?

Over the past decade we’ve travelled the world and engaged with geoscientists from all levels of experience, however a common theme that we’ve observed is that on the whole, the Oil and Gas industry poorly understands the nuances of depth conversion. “It is a Black Art!”

This is quite a considerable problem globally and we’re keen to start the conversation within the geoscience community about how we can collectively improve the knowledge of seismic interpreters; geophysicists and geologists to gain better accuracy in depth.

We feel this is especially relevant as the drive toward a clean energy future has squeezed the investment coming in at the top, such that misplacing a multi-million dollar well is far more significant now, than it has ever been.

If you’re a seasoned depth conversion veteran, then please get in touch here if you have the time to write an article that can help!

However, if you’re someone who would like to learn more about the discipline of depth conversion, then we’ve found an article that we think you’ll find interesting.

In this article, Alan Atkinson discusses three points where successful depth conversion is not a black art. He advocates that instead it is “the magic that comes about when geological and geophysical understanding combine with mapping know-how to create plausible maps on which to confidently make big investment decisions”.

We hope you enjoy the read!
