From June 2–5, 2025, the EAGE Annual drew a global crowd of geoscientists to Toulouse under the banner “Navigating Change: Geosciences Shaping a Sustainable Transition”. The event blended technical tracks, hands‑on field workshops, and a vibrant expo showcasing the latest in seismic analytics, CCS, and AI-enhanced subsurface tools.

VelPAK Module: Depth Conversion Power

At the S&P Global (Kingdom) stand VelPAK, developed by Equipoise, attracted strong interest. This standalone depth conversion module enables:

  • LogToVolume: uses well velocity logs and geological constraints to generate depth volumes and velocity models that tie tightly to seismic data
  • Wizard-guided workflows: allow seismic-to-depth conversion, pseudo-well creation, Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis, and advanced velocity calibration
  • Usability: integrates smoothly with Kingdom’s UI, offering visual surface maps, well logs, multiple realizations, and enhanced reporting tools

These capabilities directly support reservoir characterisation by producing geologically coherent velocity volumes ready for inversion or attribute mapping—capturing intra-layer complexity with ease.

One of VelPAK’s key differentiators is its ability to generate multiple depth realizations to quantify depth uncertainty. Here’s how it typically works:

  • Start from well tops and velocity data: VelPAK merges well velocity, check-shot, and stack velocity data.
  • Create a base velocity model: It converts time to depth while honoring well control.
  • Monte Carlo simulation: The algorithm then perturbs key components — scaling factors, trend coefficients, and layer velocities — to produce numerous realizations of depth.
  • Statistical analysis: VelPAK collates these realizations into P10, P50, and P90 depth models, reflecting uncertainty at each depth point across your structure.
  • Outcome: The result is a probabilistic view of depth and thickness — crucial for well placement, reserve estimates, and risk reduction.

Kingdom’s Seismic Inversion (KSI):

The seismic inversion suite demonstrated solid capabilities:

  • Post-stack and Pre-stack (PSI) inversion modules using simulated annealing generate acoustic, shear impedance, and density volumes—enabling derivation of petrophysical attributes like Poisson’s ratio, Young’s modulus, Lambda‑Rho, and brittleness
  • Inversion validation tools in Kingdom 2021 support cross-plots and log-to-volume matching for better QC

The simulated annealing algorithm is a powerful way to find a minimum-error match between synthetic and real traces under complex conditions. Here’s how it plays into the workflow:

  • Starting Model: The process starts from well control and low-frequency models.
  • Forward Model: It converts impedance to reflectivity and then to traces.
  • Simulated Annealing: The algorithm perturbs impedance values and repeatedly forward models until the match to the real traces is optimised.
  • Outcome: The result is a high-resolution acoustic and shear impedance volume, which can be cross-plotted against well properties.
  • Application: Once you have this, you can compute attributes — λρ, μρ, Poisson’s ratio — for lithology, fluids, and geomechanical properties.

Combined with VelPAK, these modules deliver a streamlined workflow that takes you from time-domain seismic through depth conversion to inversion-derived reservoir properties
