Major New Enhancement
Profile Extractor WizardThe new Profile Extractor Wizard takes enhancements to the profile module begun in 2.8 and develops them into a major wizard which takes a 2D SEGY volume and extracts the selected data for selected or all profiles. The profile data does not need to be snapped allowing sparse or sporadic data that is not continuous over a whole profile to be depth converted. Time profile data can be immediately depth converted using the SEGY velocity volume.
This new wizard displays the resultant extracted data as Ribbon maps in the Surface module, extracts the XYZ data which is gridded up – depth errors are calculated and applied to the final depth grids.
The crucial development – begun in VelPAK 2.8 – is that the profile data does not need to be snapped for the wizard to use the data. Whereas the snapping of profile data can take considerable time to get correct the user can read the data in from their interpretation software along with the SEGYs and literally produce error-corrected depth maps within minutes.
Further Enhancements
Velocity Extractor Wizard
The Volume Extractor begun in 2.8 has also now been turned into a Wizard. The Volume Extractor Wizard extracts grids from a SEGY file and places them in the VelPAK Model Tree under the ‘System’ slots. The Wizard has added extra diagnostics to the Extractor.
New LineMatch Tool
The tool has been developed to be used in the new Profile Extractor Wizard and for display of a SEGY backdrop in the Profile module.
The LineMatch tool matches 2D line names against the SEGY file to be used for that particular line. On entry into the LineMatch tool it will attempt to link the line to a named 2D SEGY file.
If the program cannot find a suitable match the File Name will say ‘# No files found – select one’, allowing you to see all the SEGY files available to select.
The Line Filter and the File Filter allow you search for particular strings of name or file to manually find and link a line or a file to each other. See instructions on the tool for details of how to do a particular search.
New Grid Convert Tool
Available from the Tools drop down menu, a utility is now available to convert grids from CPS1 to ZMAP or vice versa.
Select the directory where the grids are stored and which direction you wish them to be converted – from CPS1 to ZMAP or from ZMAP to CPS1 and press convert. A new directory will be made under the selected area called the format the grids have been converted to.
Spreadsheet Creation Added to Surface Pick
In previous versions using the Edit -> Point -> Pick clicking over certain elements being displayed on the Surface Module would bring up a panel giving information for the picked point. This has now been made into a spreadsheet which can be saved as an Excel spreadsheet using the Save icon on the spreadsheet display.
The spreadsheet is set to be ‘on’ when selecting the Point Pick option, but it can be turned off if required.
Updates to the Profile XYZ property grid
- Profile XYZ slots changed
Previously exporting Profile time values as XYZ would output into three slots to allow for overhanging events. These 3 set of values would go into the Time slot and the next two slots which unfortunately are Interval Velocity and Depth – which could mean interval velocities and depth XYZs could be overwritten.
The program has been enhanced so that the 3 XYZ output slots are hardcoded to go into the General slots. The XYZ values can be moved manually to other slots as required.
- Choose to output Indeterminates or not for Unsnapped data and sub-sample
An update for the new Profile Extractor Wizard that now allows unsnapped data to be used to produce depth grids you may or may not want the Indeterminate points to be output. Also, when events have a large number of points you can choose to sub-sample the points.
Enhancement to Profile Display to separate 2D and 3D options
You now have the option to select whether the SEGY display is to come from 3D or 2D data, with corresponding inputs available. The Seismic 2D options call up the new LineMatch utility which matches the lines within the project with the 2D SEGYs stored in the Volume directory.
Grid Trimmer
Setting Active to Yes will only grid up the areas of the layer where there is XYZ data and not extrapolate through areas where there is no data.
Closeness – To stop the extrapolation procedure of usual gridding methods. The program will use the value entered here as a radius around each node and if there are less points than the Tolerance is set to in the radius the node will be assigned as indeterminate.
Tolerance – The number of points that has to appear in the radius suggested by Closeness for the node not to be classed indeterminate.

2d Volume Diagnostics
In the same way that 3D Volume currently has an option to display a table of diagnostics, 2D Volume now has the option to produce a text file containing diagnostic information about the model, methods and values for each layer written to it as text values.
