These papers describe the method of joint inversion demonstrating how both acoustic (P) and shear (S) impedances can be inverted simultaneously using the simulated annealing approach. They serve as an illustration of how the common non-uniqueness of the problem is reduced by constraining the algorithm using priori low-frequency information.
Both synthetic and field data examples are shown to demonstrate the validity of this new technique. The application to synthetic and field data examples helps one recover the true model parameters and reveals good continuity of estimated impedance across a seismic section.
This approach has the capability of revealing the high-resolution detail needed for reservoir characterisation when a reliable migrated image is available with good well ties. The estimated acoustic and shear impedances can be combined to derive other elastic parameters, which may be used for identifying the lithology and fluid content of reservoirs.
